How to Return a Gift Without a Receipt

Most gifts can go back to the store without a receipt. What you get for one depends on which of three things you can put on the counter, tried in this order: a gift receipt, a lookup of the giver's purchase, or only your own photo ID. The first two can return roughly what was paid. The third gets store credit at whatever the item sells for now, which is often less. Before you go, know one thing: no U.S. federal law requires a store to accept a return at all, with or without a receipt.

Take a common case. A blender from Target, still boxed, from a coworker you would rather not text in January. The steps below get you as far up that list as you can go before you are left with only your driver's license.

1. Search the box, the tissue and the card for a gift receipt. It has worked when you find a slip listing the item with no price. Even a gift receipt usually brings back store credit equal to what was paid, not cash.

2. Look up the retailer's standard return window. Target gives 90 days on most items and 365 days on its own brands. Walmart gives 90 days on most items. Best Buy gives 15 days, counted from the day the product was received. Costco has no limit on most items, but electronics must come back within 90 days. Amazon may need the order number or help from the giver's account, and a recipient's return comes back as Amazon gift card balance. 4. Ask the associate to run a purchase lookup before anything else. It has worked when they find the transaction on screen. That moves the return from a guess to a record, and the money follows. In one tested case at Kohl's, a lookup recovered a full $52 where the same item without one brought about $19 in merchandise credit.

5. Hand over your ID if no record turns up. It has worked when the associate scans the license and offers credit. Expect store credit at the item's lowest recent price. Walmart pays small amounts in cash and larger ones as a gift card, and its thresholds without a receipt are worth checking first.

6. Check the amount before you sign. It has worked when the figure on the slip matches what the associate quoted.

The blender, in the end, turns out to be a matter of one awkward text. With the coworker's card type in hand, it goes back at the price that was paid.
